Having been immersed in art for the majority of my life, it is only during the last six years that I have worked exclusively in the medium of camera-computer. This body of work, started in reaction to the end of years working in a windowless midtown office, became the chance to document a season’s flow of flowers through my garden. It has evolved into a world-wide exploration and now encompasses non-flower aspects of the plant world.
I photograph flowers as they are maturing, using only the natural light that helped create them. The combination of camera and advanced technology lets me create from my reaction to them, blending reality and my perceptions. There is an intimacy similar to portraiture. The lush colors and exotic shapes exist for the most basic purpose: attracting a pollinator. The flower and the insect have evolved together in a fascinating dance with scientific rules and artiful results. It’s easy to forget how tied we are to the natural world and the mysteries of the universe. My goal is to reconnect the viewer on the deepest level possible. Guided by the patterns, forms and character inherent in the subject, I use varying techniques inspired by its uniqueness. Although the process is technical, the result is a painter’s classical one of deliberate control of light and viewpoint. My work is printed as giclees using archival ink. |
